Yacht Rock trivia question: What do these songs have in common?

“This Is It,” by Kenny Loggins
“I’ll Be Over You,” by Toto
“Peg,” by Steely Dan
“Ride Like The Wind” and “I Really Don’t Know Anymore,” by Christopher Cross

They all feature Michael McDonald on backup vocals.

When I’m editing, I can feel a little like Michael McDonald. My work is behind the scenes. I don’t get the byline. I can’t call a project my own despite how much of a role I played in it. But I know I helped make it better by doing my part.

Editing isn’t just catching typos. My goal is always to add value. Can I make it clearer and simpler? Can I improve the structure or flow? Can I make it more appropriate for the target audience? Can I ensure it will be effective at whatever it’s supposed to do? Am I providing constructive feedback so the writer can improve?

I’m sure any of those songs would have been just fine without Michael’s help. But why take the chance?

By the way, like Michael, in addition to being a go-to “backup singer” (editor), I’m also a “solo artist” (content writer) and “songwriter” (ghostwriter/speechwriter). In the past, I was part of some great bands … or teams.

Maybe we’re kindred spirits.

After all, the man sang “Sweet Freedom” and “On My Own.” He must appreciate the life of a freelancer.
